In the last 20 years an estimated 70,000 civilians have been killed. More than 3 million have fled the violence, making Colombia home to the second largest internally displaced population in the world.

Use of explosive devices in Colombia

CREATOR: Mark Skwarek
http://www.markskwarek.com/

ABOUT PROJECT:

The Waters of Acheron brings Dante's Inferno to the city of Lugano, Switzerland and turns it into a digital hell on earth!  The app allows viewers at Lugano to see the fate of a people who tried to out do the gods and lost. Witness the mythical waters of Acheron as they sweep the town and world around it away with a digital flood of the Apocalypse. The society of Lugano became addicted to the glow of digital networked light turning their backs on reality. In the light they tried to create a world better than the one created for them by the gods. Sadly, over time  a side effect was that they could only see the real world with the aid of technology. The town and its people's abuse of technology angering the gods. In response the gods turn their humans technology against them by unleashing digital flood. The enraged gods flooded the rivers and town with the virtual sea of the Apocalypse. Viewers can see the cruel fate of the Luganoians as the digital water & fire strip the land clean.

PROJECT:  Memory Capsules
CREATOR: Katherine Bennett

ABOUT PROJECT:
Memory Capsules is a series of works where organic structures enshroud personal memories. The memories are served utilizing various forms of technology that control and showcase them via image and sound. In the particular pieces shown here, Big P, memories are triggered by breath. As our own breath sustains us, our memories impact our identity and our futures. Memory Capsules seeks to foster and nurture those memories, by preserving and exhibiting them. Yet, this also calls into question the role of technology in our culture, as different algorithms can curate, connect, and weave different narratives. These narratives may be erroneous or fictional. How much is technology a mirror? How much does it shape us?

ABOUT CREATOR:
Katherine Bennett utilizes sound and light to represent people, relationships and activities that happen in other spaces and times. Her latest environments investigate the development of social networks and memory, as well as, experimenting with interaction thresholds and wireless communication traffic. She earned her MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, in Art & Technology Studies. She has won several grants. Her work has been featured in many exhibitions nationally and internationally. She runs the NYC-Creative & Experimental Software Meetup. She is a Visiting Assistant Professor, Integrated Digital Media at New York University, where she teaches physical computing, programming and interaction design.

PROJECT:  DMNDR
CREATOR: John Belitsky
http://dmndr.com/

ABOUT PROJECT:
In an effort to satiate increasingly media-hungry consumers, artist's work has been relegated to content. Content is aggregated by companies that seek to stockpile supply, which in turn has created vast wastelands of work, hidden within inconceivably expansive catalogs on sites like YouTube. For creators, this makes discovery even more difficult. For viewers, the process of selection is overwhelming. DMNDR strives to offer a community of sophisticated viewers a curated catalog of high-quality work. In our demo, we will discuss filmmaker's digital distribution pain points and how we're working to address them. We will also preview the DMNDR video platform against the majors, including Facebook, Vimeo, and YouTube.

ABOUT CREATOR:

John is a filmmaker, entrepreneur, and DJ with a passion for creating and experiencing art. He founded DMNDR to provide top-notch creatives with a powerful platform to share their work, and continues to work tirelessly in developing a discerning community to receive and support that work. His brand of “Mom and Pop Startup” relentlessly pursues authenticity and a sustainable arts-community, asserting the value of good work and rejecting the pervasive notion that it is “content”. He is most well known for his epic yellow cab ride from NYC to Los Angeles.

PROJECT: ColorSoundGrammar Game
CREATOR: Ellen Fagan
http://www.ehfaganstudio.com/projects_csg_game.html

ABOUT PROJECT:
The ColorSoundGrammar Game is a playful interaction where viewers explore synaesthesia and build connections between color and sound. To play, participants pair colors to the notes in the Do Re Mi musical scale. Their color/sound pairs are collected in a database that enables me to analyze the results, such as comparing womens' color/sound pairs to mens'. These visualizations of data often become the source material for paintings and, more recently, digital images. The other objects built into the computer program also become elements in paintings, thereby continuing the process of making sound visible in my paintings. Cognitive scientist Michael Cole wrote the program in collaboration with me on this project and The Reverse Color Organ project.

ABOUT CREATOR:
Ellen Hackl Fagan is on a quest to hear the sound of cobalt blue. Working with saturated colors when painting sensitized her to color’s communicative nature. Building connections between color and sound through abstract paintings, photography and interactive digital technologies, she seeks to create a synaesthetic language that pairs color to sound. She is developing The Reverse Color Organ and the ColorSoundGrammar Game, two interactive projects that enable viewers to explore the aural potential of color.

Her process walks the balance between randomness and intention, like jazz music, revealing limitless possibilities for improvisation. Fagan exhibits her artwork throughout the greater New York metropolitan area and maintains her studio and curatorial practice in Bushwick.

PROJECT:  Poetics
CREATOR: Seth Carnes
http://www.sic.ph/poetics/

ABOUT PROJECT:
The Poetics series began as an exploration of mutable text as visual poetry. A poem was written or typed, its language split apart and produced as moveable magnetic text objects on steel media. The project soon transformed into the research and development of an object-oriented poetry, spanning physical and virtual media. Primary work is now focused on developing the Poetics iPhone app and related projects.

ABOUT CREATOR:
Born in California, Made in NYC. Seth Indigo Carnes is a media artist whose work explores the boundaries of contemporary culture: high/low, private/public, self/group, nature/machine.

Past exhibitions include P.S. 1 MOMA, The Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art, White Box (NY), Emily Harvey Foundation (NYC), Witzenhausen Gallery (NY), Lund 2014 (Sweden), and The Drop (NYC). He has collaborated with Paul Miller (DJ Spooky), Shepard Fairey and The Roots, and shown or performed work at Ars Electronica, South by Southwest (SXSW), and Pirineos Sur. Carnes holds a BA in History from Pomona College and an MS in Media Studies from NYU Polytechnic. He is currently based in NYC.
